Artist statement

Tessa Mars (b. 1985, Port-au-Prince, Haïti) proposes storytelling and image-making as transformative strategies for survival and resistance. She challenges dominant narratives that simplify and flatten the experience of those who are marginalised by questioning History, gender, tradition, and language. In her recent work, she’s been investigating dreams, travels, and the relationships between people, land, and time. Asking a few simple questions – how do you move in the world? how do you belong? what do you know to be true? – Mars envisions the journey itself as territory, a space shaped by needs, beliefs, intuitions, and the stories that we tell.
