Open Studios 2021

44 artists show their work during 11 days and reveal what has flourished in the studios over the last 18 months

From June 17 to 27 the Rijksakademie Open Studios takes place. Shifting from the customary autumn weekend to an extended summer edition, forty-four artists will present what has emerged from over one year of experimenting, researching and producing new work.

The Open Studios will be accompanied by a programme of talks, readings and performances. If you are not able to visit the Open Studios, the talks & readings will be live streamed through the Rijksakademie website and social media. On our website you will also find video registrations of the performances and the online film programme.

The discussion will cover topics related to their collective archiving performance / performance of archiving, including their roles in the collaborative process, their working and communication methods, and their cataloguing and reflection processes. They will also give a special preview of giftsciencearchive.net, a website set to launch in September 2021, which will make publicly accessible the Gift Science Archive catalogue of studio objects and the relational cataloguing methods developed over the 18 months of the collaboration.

    12:30 – 13:00 A brief history of a mixed-tap
Julian Abraham ‘Togar’ will share his thoughts on and around sound recording in a brief presentation.

  • 12:00 – 13:30 North Sea Stories
What first comes to your mind when you hear the words “North Sea”? Is it a distant memory of a childhood boat trip? Is it the briny, funky smell of a fish market? Is it the warping waves raging against the coastlines during a stormy day? Or is it the gigantic offshore wind farms and oil platform on television news? In this panel discussion, we would like to invite you to reimagine the North Sea through storytelling. A conversation touching on lived experiences, the role of humans, non-humans, ecology, and an exploration of where art might take us. A conversation between Sheng-Wen Lo (artist RABK), Tanja Engelberts (artist RABK), Anna-Rosja Haveman (PhD candidate University of Groningen), Harpo t’Hart (curator Embassy of the North Sea) about the future of the North Sea, through the lens of art, ecology, humans and non-humans, moderated by Virág Szentkirályi, residency & programme coordinator at the Rijksakademie.

Harpo 't Hart, curator, sound-designer and sound-artist, studied piano at the Conservatory of Utrecht, Media Technology at Leiden University and Sound Studies at the Universität der Künste Berlin. In his work Harpo questions the ways in which we listen to the world. How do we listen to this rapidly changing world of climate change? Therefore, Harpo is researching music that is not about humans, but about objects: a concert of things. Since 2017 Harpo has been involved with the Parliament of Things and the Embassy of the North Sea.

Anna-Rosja Haveman is a PhD candidate at the University of Groningen. Her PhD project looks at varied artistic approaches to Dutch coastal landscapes, from the 1970s until today. She worked as a curator at the Groninger Museum and as an art mediator during Rijksakademie Open Studios. She has written among others for ‘Metropolis M’ and has published about the artistic practice of James Lee Byars in ‘Zeitschrift für Ästhetik und Allgemeine Kunstwissenschaft’. An interview with Tanja Engelberts is forthcoming in the Kunstlicht edition about the worldliness of oil. Currently she is organising the summer school and public lecture series: Curating Art and Nature.

Performance programme

When visiting the Open Studios you can register for the different performances on arrival (please note: the capacity is very limited). Publication

The publication, titled ‘We Had Plans, a book published on the occasion of the 150th year of the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam, which happened to coincide with a global pandemic, during which resident artists continued to work collaboratively as well as individually on their respective practices, whilst also navigating what could be called expanded practice’, is edited by Irene de Craen, Taylor Le Melle and Natasha Soobramanien. The publication contains a wide array of individual and collective contributions by resident artists, showing the breadth of what happens in and around their practices, and in turn, the life of the Rijksakademie in its 150th year. Designed by Julia Born and Mevis & van Deursen, the book is 242 pages and will be available for €25 at the Rijksakademie during the Open Studios, and later via our website.
