Rijksakademie alum Ruta Butkute (RA 14/15) will present the book ‘How to Make Sculpture Move’ which she made in collaboration with Emily Kocken.
To attend, please RSVP. Admission is free.
Through a process of adaptation, Emily and Ruta have arranged and structured a new text based on the original text of the book. The new text is presented in a “reading video performance”, the reading of which will be performed live by Emily. Her voice reconnects movement and words in a spatial dialogue with the video compilation of Ruta’s performances 'Centre Floor Work' and 'Let Your Body Do All the Talking’.
After the screening they will engage in a dialogue with contributors of the book and attendees exploring questions concerning the relation between body, sculpture, text and performance.
Sculpture, choreography, and installation are the main pillars of Ruta Butkute's art practice. Her method is guided by a reflective approach to the physicality of sculpture and the relation to the performers, audiences and the spaces in which they interact. Coming from a ceramics background, she started to translate sculpture into different mediums during her residency at the Rijksakademie (14/15). Over the course of her residency she developed a new medium which she calls ‘sculptural performance’.
The publication by Jap Sam Books has been made possible with the generous support of Mondriaan Fund, Jaap Harten Fonds, Amsterdams Fonds voor de kunst and Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds/Tijlfonds.
