Standing alone if you can't stand alone

Guido van der Werve

Tuesday 10 March, 19.00 hours
Rijksakademie Schip
Entrance free, RSVP here

In this talk, artist-filmmaker, musician and composer Guido van der Werve (RA 06/07) will share about how his way of working developed over the past 23 years, reflecting on works that marked important moments in his trajectory.

Guido van der Werve has played the piano since childhood and, since 2003, has been trying to create video art with the same direct emotional impact as music.

His works, presented as numbered pieces, are built through a process in which he composes both the images and the score. Together, they form a body of work often described as contemplative, where solitude and the search for a kind of utopia remain constant themes.

His latest project, 'Installation nummer negentien, in a soft voice with a lot of feeling', is a video installation inspired by Chopin’s Nocturne No. 13. It recently opened at EENWERK gallery in Amsterdam, the exhibition is open to the public until 11 April.

Guido van der Werve

Guido van der Werve was born in 1977 in Papendrecht in the Netherlands. He played piano from a young age and tries to make video art with the same directness as music since 2003, for which he composes the music. His work has been acquired by amongst others the Museum of Modern Art (New York, US) and the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam, NL).
