The Venice Editions

Rijksakademie announces its second set of artist editions

The Venice Editions, features work from five alumni who participated in the 59th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition: Monira Al Qadiri, Simnikiwe Buhlungu, Mire Lee, Janis Rafa and Müge Yilmaz.

Driven by the success of our first set of artist editions, it is with great pleasure that we announce the launch of ‘The Venice Editions’ during the Rijksakademie Open Studios 2023 (2 – 4 & 8 – 11 June).

The Venice Editions presents new work by Monira Al Qadiri (KW), Simnikiwe Buhlungu (ZA), Mire Lee (KR), Janis Rafa (GR) and Müge Yilmaz (TR), who participated in the main exhibition of the 59th Venice Biennale The Milk of Dreams. With this set of editions the Rijksakademie recognises the presence of our alumni in the international art field and celebrate the trajectory of their artistic developments. The Venice Editions remembers how the artists’ current practices are still connected to their time as a Rijksakademie resident and how they’ve evolved since.

“Mire Lee, Janis Rafa, Müge Yilmaz, Monira Al Qadiri and Simnikiwe Buhlungu are extraordinary artists. I had the honour of working with them in the occasion of The Milk of Dreams, the 59th International Art Exhibition I curated at La Biennale di Venezia in 2022. While their practice is diverse and at times divergent, they all show a critical approach to art making and a profound understanding of materials and processes, a testament to the time spent at the Rijksakademie. I look very much forward to seeing their brilliant careers in the years to come.”

– Cecilia Alemani, curator 'The Milk of Dreams'

The Venice Editions is a continuation of our ‘for-artists-by-artists’ fundraising support which started in 2010 with the establishment of the Artist Endowment Fund. All proceeds from the editions will benefit the support of the next generation of artists at the Rijksakademie.

As with the previous set of editions, this was a collaboration with curator Aveline de Bruin, who developed the concept and assisted in the creation of the works and the exhibition at the Rijksakademie. For more information and pricing, please send an e-mail to edition@rijksakademie.nl

In a Box

The first set of artist editions, In a Box, released in 2021, celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Rijksakademie and reflected on the breadth and diversity of artists and their practices that contributed towards making the Rijksakademie an international breeding ground for new ideas, viewpoints and professional development. The box contains print works, textiles, ceramics, paintings, video, animation and more by artists Carlos Amorales, Yael Bartana, Rossella Biscotti, Sander Breure & Witte van Hulzen, Xinyi Cheng, Pauline Curnier Jardin, Meiro Koizumi, Gareth Nyandoro, Amalia Pica, Praneet Soi, Jennifer Tee, Nora Turato and Helen Verhoeven. Together with the release of 'In a Box', alumna Claudia Martínez Garay released a special artist edition, a colourful print with a laser drawing entitled: 'Tupananchiskama (until we meet again)' in an edition of 150. A few of the editions are still available.
