Open Call

Tech Fellowship Programme 2025

Would you like to learn to work as a specialist in a workshop? Would you like to do your own research from within a workshop? Do you live and work in the Netherlands?

In addition to the Open Call we sent out in summer (for tech fellowships in Ceramics and the Library/Collections), we are happy to announce that we have another place available for the next edition of the Tech Fellowship Programme, that runs from January to December 2025.

We are looking for a tech fellow in one of the following workshops:

- Media lab
- Metal
- Paint lab
- Print lab

The deadline for submitting your application is 17 November 2024.
Interviews will take place at the Rijksakademie between 2 and 7 December 2024.

The Tech Fellowship programme is made possible in part by Stichting Gieskes-Strijbis Fonds, Rabobank Nederland, Stichting Van Achterbergh-Domhof, Pauwhof Fonds, Stichting Stokroos and het Cultuurfonds.

Programme

The programme consists of two parts:

– Learning, assisting and cooperating in the workshop of your choice (2 days per week)
– Research (2 days per week)

The workshop

As a tech fellow, you will work together with your mentor, the technical specialist and learn how to work as a specialist/advisor with artists in the workshop of the Rijksakademie. Flexibility as well as focus is required.

Your research

You have the ambition and curiosity to conduct research to increase your knowledge of materials, crafts or new techniques. You have a desire to contribute to the work of others, and you aim to add value to the technical field. You submit a research plan in which sustainability in the workshops is self-evident. This research also will take place in the workshop.

Who can apply?

Young and mid-career artists or designers with advanced knowledge of and interest in expanding their skills in the field of crafts, materials and/or techniques can apply.

You have demonstrable experience in the field of your choice in the broadest sense. You have an independent, curious working attitude. You enjoy collaborating with others and sharing knowledge and can work in an international community, where the working language is English. We would like to receive proposals with clear project plans. These can shift in the process, but we’d like to know what the initial intended scope of the project will be.

You are available four days a week during the period of 12 months (January–December), living in The Netherlands at the moment of applying and during the Tech fellowship year 2025, and registered as self-employed.

What do we offer?

• A trainee/research programme in the workshops
• Personal guidance and coaching by the mentor of the Tech Fellowship Programme
• Possibility to attend workshops, lectures, seminars relevant to the development of the discipline
• Exchange with other institutions/workshops
• Shared workspace/office with the other fellows
• A compensation of € 22.000 for twelve months on an invoicing basis

Individual learning goals and objectives are determined in consultation at the beginning of the programme. The main criteria are the artistic and technical knowledge of the fellow, the submitted plan, the ambition to conduct and document research, to increase one's own knowledge, the desire to contribute to the work of others and the intended added value for the field.
